Abstract:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping pharmaceutical sciences across drug discovery, development, and patient care. Preparing the next generation to lead in this transformation requires innovative educational models that integrate computational and data-driven skills with pharmaceutical training. This talk will highlight the design and impact of the UCSF Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Computational Drug Discovery and Development (AICD3) program the first of its kind in the United States and share strategies to equip students with the competencies needed to thrive in a technology-driven pharmaceutical future.

Biosketch:

Dr. Joanne Chun, PharmD, PhD, is a faculty member in the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences at UCSF and the founding architect and Director of the Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Computational Drug Discovery and Development (AICD3) program. This first-of-its-kind program in the United States trains students to apply AI, machine learning, and advanced computational methods across the entire drug discovery and development spectrum. Dr. Chun also serves as Director of Postgraduate Education Programs, leading the design of innovative academic offerings that integrate cutting-edge research and technology into education. Her research interests include pharmacogenomics, pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics, precision medicine, cancer biology, and AI-driven computational methods for drug discovery and development. Dr. Chun earned both her PharmD and PhD at UCSF and completed a full-stack software engineering certification at UC Berkeley.

Abstract:

Nanomedicines are extensively used for cancer therapy. By delivering drug molecules more effectively and more selectively to pathological sites, they assist in improving the balance between drug efficacy and toxicity. The tumor accumulation of nanomedicines is traditionally ascribed to the EPR effect, which is highly variable, both in animal models and in patients. To address issues associated with EPR heterogeneity, and to facilitate cancer nanomedicine clinical translation, we are working on artificial intelligence tools and advanced combination ther-apy technologies to predict, monitor and modulate tumor-targeted drug delivery. In the present lecture, several of these strategies will be highlighted, including machine learning optimized ultrasound interventions to image and prime the tumor microenvironment, and the use of gradient tree boosting-based tissue biomarkers to pre-select tumors and patients likely to respond to cancer nanotherapies. ltogether, our work aims to establish ra-tional and realistic ways forward towards improving the clinical impact of cancer nanomedicines.

Biosketch:

Twan Lammers obtained a D.Sc. in Radiation Oncology from Heidelberg University in 2008 and a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Technology from Utrecht University in 2009. In the same year, he started the Nanomedicine and Theranostics group at RWTH Aachen University. In 2014, he was promoted to full professor of medicine at RWTH Aachen University Clinic. His group aims to individualize and improve disease treatment by combining drug targeting with imaging. To this end, image-guided (theranostic) drug delivery systems are being developed, as well as materials and methods to monitor tumor growth, angiogenesis, inflammation, fibrosis and metastasis. He has received multiple scholarships and awards, including ERC starting, consolidator and proof-of-concept grants, the CRS Young Investigator and Exceptional Leadership Awards, the Adritelf International Award, the Belgian Society for Pharmaceutical Sciences International Award, and the JNB Trailblazer Award. He was president of the Controlled Release Society in 2023-2024 and currently serves as secretary of the European Society for Molecular Imaging. He is a member of the editorial board of 10 journals, and acts as associate editor for JCR, DDTR and MIB. Since 2019, he is included in the Clarivate Analytics list of Highly Cited Researchers.

Abstract:

AI, Models and Networks: A trifecta reshaping early-stage drug discovery Early drug discovery remains one of the most demanding stages in pharmaceutical development, where pivotal choices about targets, pathways, and candidate molecules largely determine future clinical outcomes. In this talk, I will argue that the integration of AI, networks, and models offers a powerful means to reduce uncertainty and guide discovery more systematically. I will begin with PURE, our recently developed framework for structure-constrained molecular generation. PURE combines self-supervised learning with policy-guided reinforcement learning to address limitations of current deep learning methods. By avoiding biases from task-specific metrics and working directly in the discrete molecular space, it produces novel, diverse molecules that balance structural similarity to reference compounds with desirable properties. Next, I will trace how complementary network and model-based approaches broaden the possibilities of early discovery. Model-based analyses, as in our work on metabolic vulnerabilities in Candida albicans and on synthetic lethality in metabolism, show how mechanistic insights can inform target identification. Similarly, predictive models of cancer driver genes highlight how AI can uncover potential therapeutic targets. Taken together, these examples show how AI, networks, and models work in concert: AI learns from heterogeneous data, networks expose key relationships and structures, and models supply mechanistic grounding. This synergy has the potential to transform early discovery from a largely trial-and-error process into a more systematic, data-driven science.

Biosketch:

Karthik Raman is a Professor at the Department of Data Science and AI at the Wadhwani School of Data Science & AI (WSAI), IIT Madras. Karthik’s research group employs a three-pronged strategy, combining networks, models and AI, to understand, predict and manipulate complex biological networks. Karthik’s group has developed multiple scalable algorithms and computational frameworks, applicable across synthetic and systems biology. Key focus areas in his research encompass microbiome systems biology, in silico metabolic engineering, biological network design, and biological big data analysis. Karthik also co ordinates the Centre for Integrative Biology and Systems mEdicine (IBSE) at IIT Madras, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations. Karthik’s group has extensive collaborations with industry partners, exploring how data science and AI can deliver impactful insights for pharma, healthcare, and life sciences. Alongside his research, Karthik is deeply invested in teaching and mentoring. At IIT Madras, he teaches first year undergraduate courses in programming, data structures, and algorithms, as well as advanced courses in computational and systems biology. He has also authored a textbook on Computational Systems Biology. Beyond his core research and teaching, Karthik is actively engaged with the emerging landscape of AI literacy and education. He has contributed to national AI curriculum development, including initiatives like AI Samarth, which aims to empower students across India to engage with AI meaningfully, safely and responsibly. He is also an advisor at the Office of Global Engagement, IIT Madras, where his team has enabled funding and smooth execution of several major international conferences at IIT Madras.

Abstract:

The technological revolution being witnessed today largely owes to the emergence of Artificial Intelligence, and particularly machine learning, which has impacted both basic and applied sciences. The ability to ask scientific questions and probe the new technological space was greatly enhanced due to the new roads made by intelligent technologies. In this talk, I would like to focus on three areas: a) protein structure-function relationships, b) drug discovery and c) health care, and how these emerging technologies have metamorphosed the research practices in these fields. The impact of the AI-driven technologies in hit and lead identification, lead optimization, animal and clinical trials will be analyzed with some illustrative case studies. Examples will be given where the top-niche human skills are being slowly replaced by machine learning and chatbots. Drug discovery and healthcare appear to be two different areas, but AI and ML techniques are able to bring some unusual correlations between these areas. Some of the fundamental questions on aging, metabolic disorders, degenerative diseases, and geriatric care will be addressed. Importantly, how these questions can be effectively addressed by using AI and ML approaches will be explained.

Biosketch:

Dr. G. Narahari Sastry is a professor at the Department of Biotechnology, IIT Hyderabad. His research interests are working in the interdisciplinary areas of chemistry, biology, material science, software development and artificial intelligence. In the last decade, the GNS group was involved in developing indigenous software that aims to strengthen computational drug discovery called the Molecular Property Diagnostic Suite (MPDS), thereby working towards Aatma Nirbhar Bharat. Dr. Sastry has also made fundamental contributions in the field of non-covalent interaction, Bucky bowl chemistry, aromaticity, and pericyclic reaction. He has made a great contribution in open-source software development in the field of Computer-Aided Drug Discovery, databases, and web servers; all the resources developed by his group are freely accessible to the scientific community. He has published more than 340 research articles in reputed journals with an active average impact factor. Most of his papers are well cited, with a total of 14500 citations, an h-index of 56, and an i10 index of 250, as per Google Scholar. Dr. Sastry and his group have mainly contributed to and maintained various web-based platforms and databases, such as a) MPDS (for several diseases), b) CAD, c) A2ID, d) PLID, e) NEI-MPDB, and f) OSADHI. He guided 31 Ph.D. and 30 Post doctoral fellows, besides over 200 people who are involved in short-term visits. He has given over 450 lectures in both national and international conferences, invited talks and symposia.

Prior to joining IITH in 2024, Professor Sastry was the Director of CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Jorhat, Assam from February 2019. Before working at CSIR-NEIST, he was the chief scientist and head of the Canter for Molecular Modelling Division at CSIR-IICT, Hyderabad from 2002-2019. Prior to that Dr. Sastry has served as a Lecturer, Department of Chemistry, Pondicherry University, Pondicherry. Dr. Sastry has obtained his Postdoc studies from Israel and Switzerland (1994-1997) and Ph.D. degree from University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad. He has a broad expertise in 10 years of teaching experience of Bioinformatics courses in CDAC-IICT JNTU sponsored courses. He was also in the board of studies of AcSIR, Osmania University-Biochemistry department, JNTU-Science department, and Andhra University, and a few more. Dr. Sastry is also involved in a number of outreach programs and has widely travelled across the globe, visiting over 25 countries. His stay as a visiting professor (faculty) in Japan, USA, Germany, and Switzerland, besides several short visits to attend and organize meetings abroad, has established a strong relationship in building international collaborations across the disciplines.

Abstract:

Cancer is a global problem; India ranks 2nd in cancer mortality and cancer incidences are on the rise in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Gene therapy, especially CAR-T cell therapy platform is an emerging therapeutic platform for cancer cure. Recent studies have shown remarkable success in curing blood cancers like leukaemia and lymphomas. However, this technology platform is exorbitantly expensive (500,000 USD/patient) and not available in India and in LMICs. Our objective is to ensure access of this technology platform to all patients, who might benefit from these therapies. Recently, we designed and developed a robust, safe and highly affordable technology platform. To validate the platform, first-in-human Phase I clinical trial (investigator-initiated trial) and a pivotal Phase II trial (ImmunoACT sponsored) are successfully concluded. The results of these trials showed excellent safety profile and efficacy profile. In fact, few patients are in long-term remission. Based on these extraordinary results, CD19 CAR-T is approved by CDSCO for commercial use in October 2023, and now over 300 patients are treated across the country. Overall, our affordable platform will ensure access of gene therapy, CAR-T cell therapy, to patients in India and in LMICs and save millions of lives.

Dr. Rahul Purwar is a professor at Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering at IIT Bombay. He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Medicine from Hannover Medical School, Germany. Dr. Rahul’s professional journey spans various prestigious institutions and roles. He started his post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. After his fellowship, he joined ImmunoGen, Inc. (Boston, USA), as a scientist before returning to India as a faculty member at IIT Bombay. His lab at IIT Bombay developed indigenous technology platform for CD19 CAR-T cell therapy, a type of gene therapy. Based on his research at IIT Bombay, Dr Purwar founded ImmunoACT in 2018, first cell & gene therapy company in India. Upon successful multiple clinical trials, ImmunoACT received market authorization of the country’s first CAR-T cell therapy, and Honorable President of India dedicated CAR-T cell therapy to the nation on April 4th, 2024. This is the first of many planned milestones in democratizing access to advanced cell & gene therapies in India. Dr. Purwar’s research work is well-recognized in the scientific community, with numerous publications to his credit in esteemed journals. In silico modelling and model informed drug development (MIDD) play a vital role in pharmaceutical drug product development. Use of in silico modelling tools, such as PBPK M&S (physiologically based pharmacokinetic modelling and simulation) and PBBM (physiologically based biopharmaceutics modelling) has been acknowledged and encouraged by regulatory agencies across the globe. The applications of these tools span from early discovery to clinical phases of drug development and frequently forms a part of the regulatory approval of drug products. These tools enable informed decision making at various stages of product development, be it for NCE (new chemical entity) research or for Generic drug product research. The presentation will follow an introduction to the interface of GPX™ i.e. GastroPlus®X2 (10.2), which is the latest version of a leading PBPK/PBBM modelling software offered by Simulations Plus, Inc. It is highly appreciated by researchers and regulatory agencies across the globe. The new interface will also integrate with AI through AssessmentPlus™ AI and GastroPlusChat™ to assist the user in building the baseline model and gaining insights into various underlying mechanistic processes and generating reports

Anant Ketkar is working with Simulations Plus, inc., as a Principal Scientist in the role of ‘Scientific Lead – India’. He is involved in the application of PBPK/PBBM modelling and simulation to meet the objectives of various client projects. He also provides scientific input both in terms of software applications and project proposals to Indian distributors to support their marketing and sales efforts.

In partnership with Indian distributors, Electrolab and Molecular Solutions, he supports Simulations Plus’s many customers in India and serves as a thought leader to increase awareness and adoption of PBBM/PBPK modelling throughout the country. He delivers modelling and simulation projects to address client objectives and inform regulatory interactions. Anant earned his doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Poona College of Pharmacy (Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University), Pune, India. He carries around 25 years of experience in formulation research, including around 10 years of experience in PBPK-PBBM modelling for immediate release and extended release solid orals of NCEs and generic compounds, and subcutaneous extended-release formulations. His expertise covers IVIVR and IVIVC, virtual bioequivalence (VBE), defining clinically relevant drug-product specifications (CRDPS) and helping formulation research scientists in gaining model-based insights for designing the drug product and bio-predictive in-vitro dissolution methods. Prior to joining Simulations Plus in 2022, Anant was Head of Technical Services at IQGEN-X Pharma, where he led a team of formulation team leaders and scientists for development of solid and liquid orals, and injectables for the global market. Prior to that he worked in positions of increasing seniority with pharmaceutical research companies, including Bioved Pharmaceuticals Inc., Ranbaxy (now Sun Pharma), Pfizer Animal Health (now Zoetis), Sandoz and Sun Pharma Advanced Research Company (SPARC). Abstract:

Artificial intelligence and machine learning is a upcoming technology in medical device discovery and development for diagnostics, personalized medicine, drug discovery and development, robotic surgery, predictive analytics, manufacturing and quality control, verification and validation, patient monitoring. Drug device combination for medical devices are therapeutic or diagnostic products biologics and pharmaceuticals that involve a drug component of dose optimization, pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) modelling individualized dosing and regulatory submissions. Abstract:

Past few decades, evidence has been generated for the utility of Pharmacogenomic (PGx)testing for pairs of many gene–one drug, or one gene-many drugs. However, practice is confined to a few domains such as oncology and cardiology that have shown a high impact. Pre-emptive PGx testing also demonstrated reductions in serious adverse events. Various studies across the globe have also demonstrated that each individual carries a number of actionable PGx variants ranging from one to many depending upon their ethnicity. Though most of the drug labels do not require or recommend PGx testing, having this genetic information preemptively could be of help in their lifetime for guided dosing of drugs where there is clear demonstrated benefit in terms of treatment outcomes and costs. Evidence generation for other relevant medication in use, development and novel approaches, e.g. immunotherapy, remains a work in progress. Continued education, expanding the list of guidelines for PGx guided dosing and therapies, electronic health record system implementation systems with integration of PGx information is the key to successful implementation of PGx testing in clinics.

Dr. Uppugunduri holds a PhD Pharmacogenetics/Medical Pharmacology. He is currently working as an Assistant professor in Department of Medical Oncology, JIPMER, Puducherry. He completed PhD at Department of Pharmacology, JIPMER, Puducherry in 2010 during which he received the Indo-Swiss Research Fellowship. Following completion of PhD, he continued to work in pharmacogenetics/omics at CANSEARCH Research platform of pediatric oncology and hematology of University of Geneva and headed the experimental research division until May 2024. He is a recognized Clinical Pharmacologist from Swiss Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology (SSCPT). He is also serving as a visiting faculty at Department of Pharmacology, Kasturba Medical college, Mangalore and as a guest faculty at AIMSR, Hyderabad, India. His research focuses on pharmacogenetics and personalized medicine with contributions in elucidating drug responses, drug-drug interactions in relation to genetic variants. He founded the forum on personalized medicine on nature network in 2010 (currently available at www.personalizedmedicine.in ). He is also an active member of a few national and international pharmacological and pharmacogenomic organisations including Clinical Pharmacogenomics Implementation Consortium (CPIC) and Pharmacogenomics Research Network (PGRN).

Abstract:

Robust, reliable and quantitative detection of biomarkers at ultra-low concentration is of great importance in clinical settings. Sensor, an analytical device used for sensitive and selective detection of biomarkers offers various advantages over the conventional clinical diagnosis, which is both time consuming and not suitable for point of care/onsite diagnosis. The bioreceptors embedded in the sensing chip include antibodies, aptamers, enzymes, bio bodies etc. for detection as well as providing the analytical signals. A revolution in the understanding and synthesis of nanomaterials in the last couple of decades has also contributed significantly to the development of the biosensors in terms of sensitivity, catalytic activity, biocompatibility, and robustness. Additionally, nanomaterial engineering helped in miniaturization of the sensing platform eventually helping in the commercial success of portable biosensing devices. Such platforms have tremendous promise in detecting various analytes including disease biomarkers, microbes, chemical compounds. This presentation is focused on the engineering design of sensor systems using engineered bioreceptors and nanocatalytic systems etc. Recently developed nanoscale materials-based transduction systems will be discussed with clinical biomarkers that can be further directed towards the detection of various biomarkers in clinical research. Recently reported signal transductions strategies, promising personalized smart phone assisted electrochemical sensing platform for disease diagnosis will also be discussed. Prof. Pranjal Chandra is an Associate Professor and coordinator / head at the School of Biochemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi, India. He earned his Ph.D. from Pusan National University, South Korea and did post-doctoral training at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Israel. His research focus is highly interdisciplinary, spanning a wide range in biotechnology, nanobiosensors, material engineering, and nanomedicine. He has designed several commercially viable biosensing prototypes that can be operated for onsite analysis for biomedical diagnostics. Prof. Chandra is author of over 210 high impact publications including research / reviews papers and invited book chapters. Professor Rakesh K. Tekade, currently Associate Dean (R&D), Professor & Head, Department of Pharmaceutics at NIPER-Ahmedabad, is an academic-researcher with over 15 years of experience in teaching and research. He received his doctoral degree from Dr. Hari Singh Gour Central University of Sagar (India). He worked as a as a Postdoctoral fellow-I in University of Hawaii, USA; and as Postdoctoral fellow-II in University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, USA.

He is a Recipient of several acclaimed awards, including Commonwealth Fellowship- UK, National Doctoral Fellowship (AICTE-India), IRISH Government Postdoctoral Fellowship (Ireland), CSIR Research Fellowship (CSIR India), to name a few. He is a recipient of a British Council Split-site research Fellowship (awarded at the University of Central Lancashire, UK), and has served in industry (R&D, Ranbaxy, India).

Abstract:

Introduction: Lipid-based nanocarriers such as liposomes, niosomes, and solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) are widely explored in drug delivery due to their biocompatibility and capacity to encapsulate both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs. A molecular-level understanding of their self-assembly and structural stability is critical for rational formulation design. In this study, we employed Martini coarse-grained (CG) molecular dynamics simulations to investigate and compare the self-assembly behavior and drug–lipid interactions of these three vesicular systems.

Methods: CG models of phospholipids (DOPC, DOPS for liposomes), non-ionic surfactants (Span 60 for niosomes), and glyceride-based lipids (e.g., glyceryl monostearate for SLNs) were constructed using the Schrödinger Materials Science Suite. To study electrostatic interactions, negatively charged lipids such as DOPS were included for Minoxidil, which was modeled as a positively charged molecule. Paclitaxel, a hydrophobic drug, was also incorporated. Each simulation box contained ~900 lipid/surfactant molecules, ~60,000 water molecules, and 5 drug molecules. Simulations were run under NPT ensemble conditions at 300 K for 3000 ns with a 10 fs time step.

Results: The self-assembled morphologies differed significantly among the systems. Liposomes and niosomes formed bilayered structures, observed as either spherical vesicles or elongated cylindrical assemblies. In contrast, SLNs formed compact, amorphous nanoparticles lacking a bilayer organization, characteristic of solid lipid aggregates. The inclusion of negatively charged lipids in liposomes enhanced electrostatic interactions with cationic Minoxidil, promoting surface binding and partial insertion into the bilayer. Paclitaxel preferentially localized within the hydrophobic core regions of liposomes and SLNs. Structural metrics such as radius of gyration (Rg), RMSD, RDF, and cluster analysis confirmed the stability and integrity of the self-assembled structures over the simulation timescale.

Conclusion: This comparative CGMD study demonstrates that lipid architecture and charge play key roles in dictating nanocarrier morphology and drug interaction profiles. While liposomes and niosomes favor bilayer-based vesicular structures, SLNs self-assemble into non-bilayered nanoparticles. The Martini force field simulations provide mechanistic insight into the self-assembly and stability of lipid nanocarriers and support rational design strategies for drug delivery applications involving hydrophobic and charged drugs like Paclitaxel and Minoxidil.

In pharmacology education, AI’s potential extends far beyond automation — it can serve as a teaching partner that supports both educators and learners in transforming how complex biomedical concepts are understood, applied, and retained.

At the National University of Singapore (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, we have begun integrating AI-powered tools into pharmacology and precision medicine curricula to promote active learning and critical thinking. These include the use of generative AI for formative assessment design, automated feedback in concept-map assignments, and AI-based flashcard and case-simulation platforms that encourage retrieval practice and spaced repetition. By embedding these innovations within undergraduate and Master’s-level modules, we aim to cultivate adaptive learners equipped to navigate data-rich and technology-driven healthcare environments.

This talk will share insights from our teaching innovations, student feedback, and preliminary outcomes showing improved learner engagement and knowledge retention. It will also discuss challenges such as ensuring academic integrity, ethical use of AI, and balancing human mentorship with technological facilitation.

Abstract:

This invited lecture will present recent progress in our laboratory on the development of advanced biomaterials for antifibrotic therapy, focusing on an enzyme-responsive, sustained-release hydrogel system for the prevention of recurrent fibrosis. Fibroproliferative diseases, arising from dysregulated wound healing and aberrant tissue remodeling, are major contributors to organ failure and account for nearly 45% of global mortality. Current antifibrotic drugs, such as pirfenidone, have limited efficacy due to pharmacokinetic constraints and incomplete inhibition of fibroblast activity, resulting in persistent fibrosis and high recurrence rates, particularly in urethral tissues. To address these challenges, our laboratory has engineered an in situ injectable silk fibroin-based hydrogel incorporating pirfenidone within a cell-adhesion inhibiting polymer matrix. This hydrogel mimics native tissue stiffness (~5 kPa), discourages fibroblast proliferation, and provides sustained, enzyme-triggered drug release synchronized with disease progression. The system demonstrated significant antifibrotic efficacy in fibroblast and urothelial cell models, as well as in 3D urothelial spheroids, effectively reducing fibroblast hyperproliferation, reactive oxygen species, and the expression of collagen I and α-SMA. It also blocked epithelial–mesenchymal transition, lowered fibrotic cell stiffness, and restored mitochondrial function, evidenced by a ~40% improvement in maximal respiration. This lecture will discuss how our enzyme-responsive hydrogel integrates biochemical and biomechanical regulation to inhibit extracellular matrix accumulation, suppress EMT, and normalize cellular mechanotransduction, offering a next-generation therapeutic strategy for preventing recurrent fibrosis and promoting tissue regeneration.

Dr. Rajasekaran is a Pharmacologist by training and he joined UCSD Urology in 1998. He has initially focused his research on urological disorders and established animal models for urinary continence function studies. He moved to Gastroenterology in 2006 and focused his research on pelvic floor muscle physiology in collaboration with Dr. Ravinder Mittal. His current areas of research include development of animal models for anal and urinary sphincter function, mechanism of skeletal muscle injury & repair and evaluation of novel pharmacological interventional agents for muscle regeneration. His current research is supported by funding from Veterans Health Administration Research & Development and American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons Research Foundation. As an accomplished Pharmacology Scientist for over 20 years, Dr. Rajasekaran has received national and international recognition for research. This includes prestigious awards, such as, the Uvnas prize for best publication in Immunopharmacology, and a national scholar award from the American Urological Association. As an academic researcher, he has also served as principal/co-investigator of industry funded projects working with Medicinova, Myogen, Actelion Pharmaceuticals, Vivus Inc, cook Urological and Pharmacia & Upjohn. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming image analysis in pharmaceutical research, enabling faster and more accurate interpretation of complex and multimodal biomedical data. Traditional manual approaches to histopathology, microscopy, and radiology are often slow and prone to variability. AI driven algorithms now automate segmentation, feature extraction, and anomaly detection, improving precision and accelerating workflows. For pharmaceutical scientists, these capabilities support high throughput screening, digital pathology, and biomarker discovery. Deep learning models trained on diverse imaging datasets can identify subtle morphological changes, predict therapeutic responses, and optimize trial design—advancing precision medicine and reducing drug development attrition. However, adoption challenges remain. Data quality, algorithm transparency, and regulatory compliance require robust governance and continuous validation. Ethical considerations, including patient privacy, demand explainable AI and federated learning approaches. Regulatory bodies are increasingly recognizing AI’s role, but frameworks for reliability and accountability are essential. Oral delivery of macromolecules remains one of the greatest challenges in pharmaceutical development. Enzymatic degradation, limited permeability, and instability under gastrointestinal conditions restrict the success of traditional approaches. Advances in enabling technologies such as lipid based formulation in softgel systems in combination with delayed release shell and lymphatic delivery have expanded formulation possibilities, allowing delivery through modified GI routes that improve bioavailability and patient compliance. Additionally, artificial intelligence is becoming a valuable tool in formulation and manufacturing, with data-driven models identifying correlations between excipient properties, processes, and product performance. This presentation examines the scientific barriers to oral macromolecule delivery, compares formulation and manufacturing learnings from fast-dissolve and softgel systems, and explores how AI-supported analytics can enhance development predictability, process robustness, and time-to-clinic.

Karunakar Sukuru is a distinguished leader in the pharmaceutical industry, with over three decades of expertise in Drug Product and Technology Development. At Catalent, he oversees the development of small molecule Rx products, guiding a team of over 800 scientists across 14 sites on four continents. His role involves managing a robust pipeline of several new molecules, utilizing diverse drug delivery technologies to support successful product launches. Karunakar has a proven track record in product development and technical oversight of numerous Contract Development and Manufacturing Organizations (CDMOs) globally. He is renowned for pioneering innovative controlled-release platform technologies in softgel dosage forms. He holds several granted patents and has over 20 pending patent applications, particularly in modified shell, fill technologies and lyophilization techniques for biologic products. Before joining Catalent in 2016, Karunakar held key positions at Endo Pharmaceuticals, Banner Pharmacaps (in India and USA), and Natco Pharma in India, demonstrating his extensive leadership in the field. He is actively involved in professional organizations, including the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), Controlled Release Society (CRS), Society for Pharmaceutical Dissolution Science (SPDS), and serves as an expert committee member at the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), for the last 10 years where he contributes to setting pharmaceutical standards. Abstract:

Recent advances in additive manufacturing and 3D printing have opened transformative pathways for creating implants and tissue scaffolds with intricate architectures tailored to individual patient needs. In this talk, I will discuss emerging trends in harnessing 3D printing for the processing of biomaterials across diverse biomedical applications. I will highlight our recent work on fabricating patient-specific implants and scaffolds with complex geometries aimed at regenerating both soft and hard tissues. By integrating smart materials and responsive design principles, these technologies can be extended to develop deployable and functional biomedical devices. Finally, I will present our ongoing efforts to utilize 3D printing for constructing in vitro tissue models that recapitulate native organization, enabling deeper insights into disease mechanisms and accelerating drug discovery.

Dr. Kaushik Chatterjee received his Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the Pennsylvania State University. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow jointly at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Institutes of Health. He then joined the Indian Institute of Science, where he is currently a Professor in the Department of Materials Engineering and the Department of Bioengineering. He also serves as the Chair of the Department of Bioengineering at IISc and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Materials Chemistry B and Materials Advances. His research group focuses on materials for biomedical applications and particularly on the use of 3D printing and additive manufacturing technologies for healthcare.

Dr. Jagadeesh's distinguished career spans over fifty years, marked by significant contributions to pharmacy, pharmacology, toxicology, pharmacokinetics, and medical sciences. His journey began as a research fellow and progressed through academic ranks to become a respected professor at various institutions. This led to his nearly 33-year tenure as a senior expert pharmacologist at the CDER of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. While at the FDA, he also served as an adjunct scientist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, USA. His specialized expertise in cardiovascular and autonomic receptor pharmacology, the renin angiotensin-aldosterone system, and G protein-coupled receptors was essential to his FDA role, in which he reviewed preclinical studies to ensure drug safety. His extensive knowledge and experience have greatly contributed to the research and development of drug products, ensuring their efficacy and safety for the public. While at the FDA, he evaluated preclinical pharmacological, ADME, and toxicological studies submitted in support of INDs and NDAs to assess drug safety.

Dr. Gowraganahalli Jagadeesh earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the Government College of Pharmacy (class of 1970), Bangalore University; a master's degree from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi; and a doctorate in pharmacology from Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi. He was a Canadian Heart Foundation fellow at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He has taught pharmacology at BHU in Varanasi and Northeastern University College of Pharmacy in Boston, USA. Currently, he serves as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at several colleges in Karnataka (see above for the description). His supervision of numerous graduate and doctoral theses highlights his dedication to mentoring the next generation of scientists.

As an author and editor, Dr. Jagadeesh has contributed to scientific literature through his publications and editorial work. He has authored or co-authored several original articles, review articles, and book chapters, edited four books, and organized multiple special issues for high impact scientific journals. Accurate particle characterization forms the cornerstone of pharmaceutical research, impacting formulation development, bioavailability, stability, and regulatory compliance. Traditional methods such as laser diffraction and manual microscopy often fail to capture the true morphological complexity of heterogeneous particle systems limiting insight into parameters that govern performance-critical attributes. This presentation introduces an AI/ML-powered particle morphology characterization framework designed to deliver high resolution, reproducible, and quantitative insights into particle size, shape, and texture. By combining deep learning with advanced image analytics, this approach enables automated detection and classification of irregular and agglomerated particles providing statistically significant data beyond conventional averages. We will present real-world case studies demonstrating how this technology supports a range of pharmaceutical applications, including:

Abstract:

The presentation begins with a brief introduction to buccal and sublingual drug delivery and the advantages of this route over swallowed medication. This is followed by a description of some basic science issues, including the methods for the preparation and storage of animal buccal tissue for ex vivo experiments, that were investigated. The resolution of some of these issues contributed to science in this area of drug delivery. In some instances, widely accepted methods were found to be defective. The effects of temperature on drug absorption through the oral mucosa were also investigated and generalizable information, gleaned from this work, is described.

The development of novel buccal-and-sublingual drug delivery systems for specific molecules are then described. The advantages of these products over conventional medications are elucidated and their contributions to therapy are mentioned. One of these was recognized by the FDA as a new indication.

Beyond these areas of experimental investigation, there are some new directions that the presenter is exploring which could be used advantageously and they are also briefly presented. Some of the learnings from buccal and sublingual drug delivery have implications for an alternate, novel route of drug delivery and the presentation ends with a forward-thinking discussion of these implications.

Dr. Pather holds B Pharm, M Pharm and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees. The research work for his terminal degree was done at the University of Missouri – Kansas City and at the pharmaceutical company, Marion-Merrell Dow, while it was awarded by the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. He has worked in retail pharmacy, hospital pharmacy and has been a founding member of a few start-up companies. He was also a founding faculty member and inaugural chair of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Department at an American University. Dr. Pather has extensive teaching experience both in South Africa and in the United States. He has also worked for 10 years in the US pharmaceutical industry, rising to the position of Director of Pharmaceutical Sciences, before returning to academia.

Dr. Pather’s expertise is in novel delivery systems, particularly buccal and sublingual delivery. His work has covered basic science as well as the development of novel drug delivery products and he has, in a few instances, developed industrial test methods where no compendial or standard methods existed. He has developed novel tablet formulations, including effervescent, orally disintegrating, and externally lubricated tablets. He has also worked in the areas of emulsions, cosmetic formulation and development, and novel sunscreen formulations.

Dr. Pather played the lead role in the development of two FDA-approved products and has published several papers and book chapters. He co-edited a book, Oral Mucosal Drug Delivery and Therapy, and was the sole author of the recently published textbook, Pharmaceutics for Pharmacy Students (McGrawHill Professional). He has 21 US patents and several international patents to his credit. He has served as consultant to pharmaceutical companies both in the US and internationally (including India). He serves as an expert witness in patent infringement litigation.

Prof. Dr. Mirza R. Baig currently serves as the Program Director-Post Graduate studies at College of Pharmacy, Dubai Medical University. He earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Pharmacy from the esteemed Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and brings over 22 years of international experience in academia and research, having worked extensively in Malaysia, India, and the United Arab Emirates.Prof. Baig has been recognized among the top scientists globally in the 2024, 2025 in Scientific Index. His innovative research has led to the awarding of one German patent in 2022 and two U.S. patents in 2024, in collaboration with King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia. He has coauthored seven books on Clinical Pharmacy, including a recent editorial contribution to a Springer publication titled Drug Development, released in April 2024. His scholarly work comprises more than 120 peer-reviewed research articles published in reputable international journals, with his latest paper appearing in Oct 2025. Prof. Dr. Baig is frequently invited to serve as a chairperson, speaker, and moderator at high-profile international conferences and seminars. He holds editorial board memberships in several prestigious journals and is a peer reviewer for multiple Elsevierpublications. He has mentored numerous master's and Ph.D. candidates and served as an external examiner for postgraduate theses at both Indian and international universities. Throughout his distinguished career, Prof. Dr. Baig has been honored with numerous accolades, including the Distinguished Alumnus Award (2024) from KLE University, India; Best Research Project Awards at conferences hosted by Al Ain University (2023) and the University of Sharjah (2019); and the Best Professor in Clinical Pharmacy Award at the Middle East Educational Awards (2018). Entrepreneurship is not only about starting a business—it is about breaking barriers and driving innovation that empowers communities. At the 74th Indian Pharmaceutical Congress (IPC 2025) in Bengaluru, themed “AI & Technology in Pharma: Educate, Innovate, Empower,” this talk explores how women entrepreneurs can harness education, technology, and leadership to shape the future of healthcare and pharmaceuticals. I will share my personal journey from India to Australia—navigating cultural and professional landscapes to establish a company focused on quality, technology, and global collaboration to set up NiA Pharmaceuticals in Australia and a sister company Bes Pharma in Bangalore. My entrepreneurial experience reflects the broader transformation of women in science and business—women who are leveraging technology and global knowledge networks to build sustainable enterprises. The session will explore the opportunities and challenges women face in entrepreneurship, particularly in science-driven industries. It will highlight how technology and AI can help bridge gender gaps by enabling access to knowledge, networks, and global markets. Drawing from personal experience, I will discuss the value of resilience, vision, and ethical leadership in scaling an enterprise while staying true to a mission of patient-centric innovation. Ultimately, this talk celebrates the spirit of women (everyone indeed) entrepreneurs who dare to innovate, empower others, and lead with purpose.

Founder Director at NiA Pharmaceuticals where in I lead by example and strive to strike the right team spirit with a mission to map the company footsteps into new emerging and regulated pharma markets. I am passionate about pharmaceutical industry and I believe in learning and growing. My key knowledge areas include global regulatory requirements, regulatory filings and vertically integrated models. I spent my early career in pharmaceutical research, academia and clinical research. Ironically, I started all over again when I came to Australia where in I was gravitated by the Australian pharmaceutical industry opportunities. Abstract:

Periodontotherapy has recently witnessed a paradigm shift from using traditional systemic antibiotics or mere mouth rinses or washes to loco-regional advanced drug delivery systems which are inserted into periodontal pocket ensuring prolonged drug release whilst reducing the undesirable effects. Plaque construction alongwith biofilm deposition is a challenging fallout of periodontitis which often compromises therapeutic outcomes. Our research team has formulated advanced drug delivery systems namely nanoencapsulated microparticles and nanofibers using QbD approaches. The current presentation would dwell upon the design , development and evaluation of such systems with a a focus on the associated attributes of biofilm disruption alongwith assessing the in vitro and in vivo success..

Dr. Zeenat Iqbal, Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutics at the School of Pharmaceutical Education & Research (SPER), Jamia Hamdard, is recognized for her outstanding contributions to Pharmaceutical sciences and academic leadership. A Gold Medalist in both B.Pharm and M.Pharm and a PhD in Pharmaceutics,from Jamia Hamdard, she has established a strong footprint in advanced drug delivery, nanotechnology-based therapeutics, topical formulations, and biofilm-targeted systems with current areas of research in cancer, (Women- Reproductive centric) vaginal and periodontal drug delivery. With over 239 peer-reviewed publications, 47 book chapters, and 8 patents to her credit, she exemplifies scholarly excellence and innovation in drug delivery research. She has consistently contributed high-impact work to pharmaceutical sciences. She has supervised 69 M.Pharm and 20 PhD researchers and led multiple government-funded projects from ICMR, SERB, CSIR, DBT, AYUSH, and AICTE. Current projects include immune-modulatory formulations (UNIM series) and nanofiber-based periodontal therapies, with significant grants exceeding ₹76 lakhs. She is also involved in consultancy collaborations with Ayurvedic and pharmaceutical industries for evaluating hepatoprotective, anti diabetic, and permeation studies of herbal/UNANI products. WomaniaPharmayan captures my journey from a 17-year-old with little awareness of professional possibilities to a scientist driven by the mission of “Innovation to Reality.” My evolution was shaped by a powerful blend of influences —my intellectual Punjabi writer-mother who taught me the art of weaving stories into science; my logical, rational father whose Ardaas (prayer) and disciplined thinking grounded me in clarity, sincerity, and purpose; and later my husband who helped me recognise my inherent beauty and confidence Together, they seeded in me a fearless curiosity, an unconventional mind, and the courage to take risks and tread paths less travelled.

I did not begin with ambition; I began with small, unsure steps—but each step was strengthened by prayer and guided by providence. What I prepared for with sincerity, God completed with grace. These values propelled me from being a computer-illiterate generation till graduation to becoming an innovator navigating AI-driven pharmaceutical science. My 44 patents (22 granted) and 4 successful technology transfers stand testimony to a journey led by bold thinking and relentless perseverance.

At IPC 2025, I hope to inspire women to trust their path, embrace reinvention, and lead fearlessly in the transformative era of AI and technology.

Professor Kaur is currently Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Professor of Pharmaceutics, UIPS Panjab University (PU). She has held eminent positions, viz. Chairperson, UIPS (2020–2023); Director, Sophisticated Analytical Instrumentation Facility, PU (2012-15); DPIIT-IPR Chair Professor(2023-2025) and Secretary, Indian Pharmaceutical Association, Punjab Branch (2017-25). She is amongst top 2% most cited scientists worldwide in the area of Pharmacy and Pharmcology, according to data promulgated by Stanford University, USA (2019-20 to 2024-25). Her research forte is enhancing the bioperformance of drugs, plant extracts/phytochemicals, and biomolecules, viz., siRNA, proteins, peptides, and probiotics, using active-tailored solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs), nanovesicles, and electrospun scaffolds as novel platform nanotechnologies. Emphasis of her work lies on Industrial and clinical translation and is reflected through licensing of 4 of her technologies to the industry and 22 granted patents (including one US) out of 44 filed applications. She has produced 27 (+7 currently guiding) PhDs and 70 (+7 currently guiding) postgraduates and has received funding of around 100 million INR from the Government and Industry. Artificial Intelligence has moved rapidly from research labs into frontline healthcare, yet its safe and effective deployment in real-world clinical settings remains a complex challenge. This talk will explore the end-to-end journey of translating AI healthcare solutions—particularly Software as a Medical Device (SaMD)—from development to bedside implementation. Drawing from practical experience in scaling AI-enabled cardiac diagnostics across diverse healthcare environments, the session will discuss core elements of quality-by-design, clinical risk management, and regulatory preparedness. Abstract:

India is bestowed with long History of usage of botanicals in our TK, which often gets criticised as “needing more evidence “. In 2015, many years post US FDA publication of Guidance to Botanical Drugs, Government of India amended the Drug Regulations by Introducing Regulations that govern Phytopharmaceuticals. This opened up new drug development from “purified fractions of botanicals, characterised with analysis of four marker compounds” for full scientific data generated to get reviewed as a New Drug by CDSCO. Such drugs will be on line with any NCE based drug approved by CDSCO. Differences between the Traditional medicines like Ayuirvedic drugs, scientific requirements for submission of an IND file to CDSCO, Global developments in Botanical drugs approvals so far, Current scenario in this filed, progress by National laboratories, Challenges, and Suggestions for successful developments will be elaborated. Indian Pharma needs to take leads in this area for Atma Nirbhar and Viksit Bharat contributions in addition to current generic drug development.

D. B. Anantha Narayana is a pharmaceutical scientist who has led development and successful marketing of pharmaceutical, Oncology drugs, Ayurvedic & Herbal products, cosmetics & Nutraceutical/ Food Supplements for more than 4 decades. He has championed notifications of a number of new regulations namely Nutraceutical Regulations, Phytopharmaceuticals Regulations, and more recently Ayurveda Aahara Regulations. He serves in various Expert Committees of FSSAI , CSIR, CCRAS, IPC, and other organizations.

He has also supported and led generation of evidence of benefit for drugs, ayurvedic, food supplements. He has also led contemporary dosage form development and technology development for a large no, of Ayurvedic/ Herbal products. He is recipient of Patanjali Life Time Achievement award of IUFOST, 2019, Mumbai, Eminent Pharmacist Award of Indian Pharmaceutical Association 2007, and IPA IRF Life Time Achievement Award, 2022.

He has authored and edited four books, has published more than 35 research and strategy papers, reviewer of research papers for number of Journals.
